Verso: "WHITE ISLAND, BAY OF PLENTY, NZ. From any vantage point in the Bay of Plenty, from Whakatāne to the East Coast of Gisborne, steam from this volcanic island can be seen in a spectacular display. Seen through the red pohutukawa blooms at Te Kaha, this sight never fails to attract attention. Circling round in a plane it is an eerie sight , with it's crater of sulphur filled with billowing steam. At one time it was mined for sulphur, until eleven lives were lost. On two points are bare patches of ground where gannets gather then leave on their annual migration. White Island is 25 miles from Whakatāne." printed in green ink, upper left; "P191" in pencil, top right ; "PHOTOGRAPHY: GLADYS M.
